This research on the fatigue strength of orthotropic decks in bridges forms part of an European inter-laboratory study. The Belgian part involves the calculation of the loading in order to perform variable amplitude tests and the realisation of fatigue tests on welds between the U-Stiffener and the deck plate, and on bolted connections between the cross-beams and the deck plates. Test results give weld fatigue strength under wheel loadings of real road traffic, taking into account an asphalt coating. The welding is automatic with a lack of penetration of 1.5 to 2.5 mm. Tests on bolted joints illustrate the influence of lever effect on bolts' fatigue strength.
