In order to ensure a high degree of safety at work, while retaining cutting quality, the employment of cutting procedures requires systems for adapative cutting parameter control, precise tool positioning, distance control and the supervision of cutting tasks. The workpiece recognition system described in this report allows the workpiece position to be measured underwater by means of a camera system. Fine positioning is performed with the help of additional inductive and optical sensors. The reliability of the system was tested in conjunction with a four-axes handling system. The conclusion reached is that decommissioning of nuclear components by an automated system underwater is definitely possible, provided that the ambient water is clean and that the components stand out clearly against the background.
