Using slip casting complex forms can be produced and fine powders dispersed, yielding high densities even after low pressure sintering. The various parameters of this processing technique are investigated for silicon nitride. On obtaining high density material the application of slip casting is extended to whisker composites of silicon carbide - silicon nitride containing up to twenty per cent fibres. Analysis of the influence of grinding of the powders, of sintering and of fibre size has resulted in an optimisation of the process of setting at work and in yields of high density composite materials. The toughening mechanisms are analysed in terms of microstructure, mechanical properties and by comparison with monolithic materials.
