Abstract

Starting from given scaling laws, goal factors and merit factors are defined, together with cost index scalings for both energy- related and power-related cost indices. The performances of a number of proposed ignition devices are compared under a spectrum of scaling laws, both in the ohmic and additional heating regimes. A number of recent scalings by S. Kaye are found to strongly favour high magnetic field devices. A couple of innovative concepts in toroidal magnet engineering are reviewed. They appear to be particularly promising in overcoming problems of structural mechanics in high field toroidal magnets.
