The Joint European Torus (JET) is the largest single project of the nuclear fusion research programme of the European Atomic Energy Community. The project was designed with the essential objectives of obtaining and studying plasma in conditions and with dimensions approaching those needed in a fusion reactor. Volume I of the progress report provides a detailed account of JET's scientific and technical progress during 1989. It contains a brief summary of the background to JET, describes its basic objectives and the principal design aspects of the machine. Volume II supplements Volume I with appendices containing contributions (in preprint form) of the more important JET articles published during the year.
