Abstract

This report analyses the accident at Chernobyl and associated phenomena with major influence on the caesium source term, including the effects of materials dumped over the reactor. It also includes measurements of the Cs-134 and Cs-137 isotopes and their ratios, in air, water, soil and agricultural products. The inventories of caesium isotopes in the core are reported. In order to make deductions of the mechanisms involved in the escape of caesium, the transient factors, and particularly fuel temperature, are analysed. The accident sequence is seen to be specific to the RBMK type reactor.
