Institute for safety technologyFunded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 5C
The Institute for Safety Technology participates in the execution of the reactor safety, waste, and safeguards programmes, all of which are specific to nuclear fission. Emphasis and support are concentrated on those projects relevant to the assessment of residual risk in nuclear power plants. In the nuclear fusion area work has been concentrated on the construction of the European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory (ETHEL) and the analysis of safety problems specific to a LiPb blanket. Work on non-nuclear industrial hazards was mainly concerned with modelling of chemical and fluid dynamic phenomena. Models were developed for the evaluation of structural reliability for steel and concrete structures. Exploratory research studies were performed into H/D extraction, purification and separation. Activities for third parties, with associated laboratories and the operation of large installations, are also described.
