Study of the propagation of ductile fractures of high pressure gas lines by laboratory experiments simulating working conditions
The objectives of this research project are : (a) to characterise, in terms of the R curve, expressed as Crack Tip Opening Angle (CTOA), steels for large-diameter gas lines, especially new steels made using controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling; (b) to make a laboratory check, via a spring-bar system, of the real applicability of the CTOA as the parameter for characterising the behaviour of structural steels as regards the initiation and stabilisation of ductile crack propagation; (c) to study the influence of the load application rate on CTOA values and, more generally, on the plastic deformation capacity of the steel.
