In southern Greenland sheep-breeding is crucial for the self-reliance economy. A mapping project was carried out in order to assess the carrying capacity of the area for sheep-breeding, for both summer grazing and winter fodder production. Satellite images - Landsat MSS - were used to map and monitor the vegetation and to develop management models. The mapping method is described as well as various aspects of the growing season, climate and landscape variation. The results are presented and discussed.
