Abstract

The generation of fringing fields by the Faraday shield of a fast wave antenna and the concomitant coupling of the wave power to electrostatic waves is analysed for the case of misaligned screen blades. The model assumes that a strip-like Faraday shield is in contact with the plasma. It is found that the fringing fields produced by the shield may markedly enhance the coupling of the wave power to the ion Bernstein waves at high plasma densities near the shield. At sufficiently low plasma densities allowing the slow wave resonance to exist near the shield, the coupling to electrostatic waves is caused mainly by the confluence of the fast and slow waves.
