Abstract

X-ray emission from laser-produced plasmas is reviewed. The mechanisms by which X-rays are generated are described and the spectra of different elements in the range Z=4 to Z=82 presented. The difficulties of X-ray lasing are outlined. Applications of the technique are listed and two, related to matter at high densities and temperatures, are described in detail.
