Global applicability of office automation and groupware products in an international research environment
TCP/IP (and in a second phase ISO) protocols are used to integrate the heterogeneous, multivendor, information technology environment currently in use at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra. For the long term, Unix is the common operating system leading to a homogeneous application platform in a multivendor environment. X.11 based products are suitable to offer a common office automation environment in the transition period towards global introduction of Unix. In a homogeneous Unix environment X.11 allows a distributed architecture, using X.terminals and workstations at the desks. Groupware facilities should be seen as natural extensions of an office automation environment, and thus should not be introduced before a homogeneous information technology and, in particular, office automation environment, has been realised. Even then the multinational and dynamical characteristics of the JRC organisation will make introduction of groupware a difficult task.
