Abstract

The Euratom Safeguards Directorate has over the past five years evaluated, field-tested, purchased, calibrated and implemented in routine inspection use a large number of modern and relatively sophisticated instruments. Many of these instruments are orientated to non-destructive assay (NDA), monitoring and logging systems (MLS) and containment/surveillance (C/S) systems. The paper focuses on those aspects which need to be taken into consideration when equipment is permanently installed in nuclear installations. Various concepts are discussed and practical solutions are presented. These examples include automatic nuclear material flow measurement stations, logging devices, C/S systems in storage areas, data collection and transmission systems. The paper also presents concepts and practical solutions concerning the validation of operators' equipment, including software.
