European Community initiatives for information market development
The competitiveness and prosperity of today's economies are increasingly dependent on the availability, quality and accessibility of relevant information sources. Appropriate information is a pre-requisite for commercial operations across borders. The development of electronic information services at European level can have a major impact on the integration of the Community's economy. The Commission of the European Communities has embarked on a 2-year programme (1989-90) for the development of the information services market - IMPACT 1. This programme addresses a number of horizontal actions aimed at improving the conditions for information supply and access, and a series of demonstration projects which are expected to exert a catalytic effect on the supply and use of information services for professional end users of information. The great interest of the information services industry in this programme has demonstrated its considerable potential for market development as well as the need for a follow-up, in order to exploit initial developments to the full.
