Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This catalogue of components for use in energy efficient buildings aims to assist building designers throughout the Community. Considerable improvements in the thermal and visual comfort of occupants, combined with very significant energy cost savings, can be made by designing buildings which respond more efficiently to local climate, topography and human requirements. Some of the techniques and principles involved are not new. However, many of the components illustrated have taken advantage of recent developments in materials, manufacturing techniques and in an increased understanding of building physics and human comfort. Adoption of the principles of climate sensitive design need not impose any significant additional building cost and is likely to result in lower running costs and improved amenity, while affording the designer exciting new opportunities.
