The general theme of the workshop held at Varenna in August 1987 was the physics of confinement in tokamaks and stellarators. The domains specifically covered are the computation of 30 types of equilibria and their stability, ballooning modes and internal modes in tokamaks, influence of flow on stability, bifurcation phenomena, resistive instabilities with toroidal effects, non-linear resistive modes, disruptions and relaxations in tokamaks and heliotrons, transport in tokamaks, neo-classical description of boot-strap current, linear and saturated drift-wave instabilities and transport, fluid-kinetic effects, micro-tearing modes, hybrid modelling of plasmas and some fluid-kinetic effects of plasma topology on RF heating. The proceedings include review papers on the main topics, long invited papers and short contributions dealing with specific issues.
