The design and operation of experimental glove-boxes and related gaseous detritiation systems in the European Tritium Handling Experimental LaboratoryFunded under: FP1-FUSION 9C
In all radiochemical installations, adequate precautions must be taken to minimise operator doses under normal and abnormal conditions. Research performed in ETHEL (European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory), presently under construction at JRC-Ispra in Italy, will employ glove-boxes, in which the atmosphere is continuously circulated through a tritium removal system, as general containments for experimental apparatus. This paper describes the glove-boxes, with particular emphasis on the safety features incorporated into their design and eventual operation. The gaseous detritiation systems serving the glove-boxes are described, together with their expected performance characteristics.
