In the last 10-15 years large savings in energy consumption for heating have been achieved in Denmark. The savings have been obtained primarily by energy conservation and changing to more energy conscious habits. Provision of passive solar systems seems to have a large potential for further savings. Passive solar systems have to act both as a building component and as a part of the heating system of the building, making them difficult to apply in a project. The purpose of this investigation is to focus on the possibilities of utilisation of passive solar features in the existing building stock. The aim is to get an overall view of the utilisation possibilities, to compare the different ways to adapt the existing building stock and to examine the constraints that might exist. As the passive solar measures are an integrated part of a building, the concept requires careful investigation of the thermal balance and of human comfort in a building.
