The future continuity of the European steel industry makes it necessary to evaluate present studies in terms of: - the competitiveness of European steel making compared to its principal rivals; - the competitiveness of steel compared to other materials in traditional markets and even in new markets. The significant contraction of R&D budgets during the recession has caused long term projects to be deferred. Today industry is anxious to determine which will be the steelmaking processes in use in the year 2000, because this affects investments to be made or deferred. This is the reason for the multiplicity of current projects and the diversity of topics under investigation.
