Gaussian distribution for spacings of simple neutron resonances
The nearest level spacing distribution is studied for simple excited (2p-1h) neutron resonances. According to a comparison of level densities for neutron resonances and for calculated values of doorway states, such resonances are available at neutron separation energy for A<38 and closed shell nuclei. A Gaussian-like distribution for 28Si, 32S, 40Ca, 52Cr, 54Fe, 58Fe, and 96Zr is obtained. The standard deviation of this distribution determines the lifetime of phonons and the latter agrees quite well with the lifetime of resonances based on the average neutron width. These values, using the same amount of resonance data for both lifetimes, are more precise in the phonon model but favour the lattice model for a nucleus.
