The Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas has been actively involved in the development of both quasi-optical (Q.O.) and cylindrical cavity gyrotrons with an emphasis on the Q.O. concept. Some new theoretical work has been performed, which may provide some clue for the understanding of the problem of the modest efficiency obtained so far in all Q.O. gyrotrons. Recently progress has also been made in the field of output coupling. Using a cylindrical cavity gyrotron operating as a Backward Wave Oscillator, a novel method is used to measure the alpha of the electron beam. A 39GHz TE(02) gyrotron has also been built and installed on the TCA tokamak of the laboratory.
