Abstract

Although solar energy provides 13% of the EEC's primary energy in non-industrial buildings, this could be increased to 87% by the year 2010 through the use of passive solar design, resulting in a total saving in CO(2) emissions of 333 million tonnes per annum - equivalent to the amount of pollution saved by closing down 82 ordinary power stations. To achieve this aim, this study advocates positive action on all fronts: legislation, fuel price rises, carbon taxes, grants, promotion of and education in passive solar design and the development of new technology.
