Monitoring European agriculture by remote sensing: Action 4: "Rapid estimates" of the JRC's pilot projectFunded under: JRC-REMSENS 4C
This paper describes the five year "Rapid Estimates" pilot project for remote sensing applied to agricultural statistics at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra. Monitoring is carried out with agro-meteorological models operating at regional, national and European scales as well as with low-resolution (AVHRR) satellite imagery. Landsats' Thematic Mapper is used for systematic sampling at high-resolution. The aim is to provide rapid estimates of changes in crop acreages or condition over the agricultural year. Farmers and independent contractors also provide ground data which, with official statistics, are used as background information for the image interpreters, who are highly-trained professional agronomists. Results will be compared with official statistics as they become available.
