The need for the improvement of the quality of results in monitoring campaigns of freshwater systems led the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) to produce a series of certified reference materials (CRMs) which involve the certification of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sc, Se and Zn in lake and river sediment (CRM 280 and CRM 320) and the certification of Cd, Cu, Mn, Hg, Pb and Zn in two aquatic plants (Lagorosiphon major and Platihypnium riparioides, CRM 60 and 61).
