An implicit integration algorithm, the generalised midpoint rule, is applied to a set of viscoplastic constitutive equations under the plane stress constraint. This constraint is consistently incorporated within the integration scheme without necessitating any additional equation. The resulting system of nonlinear equations is solved by Newton's method. The accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm are underlined by several numerical experiments.
