The exact formula for the number density of a single beam of field electrons falling on a test electron or on a positive test ion is derived by assuming test-field interactions only. It is shown that the test electron occupies the focus of an empty parabolic envelope formed by the hyperbolic trajectories of the field electrons. No similar empty region is observed in the case of the positive ion. In accordance with conventional theory, the force exerted by the beam on the test charge is found in both cases to depend on the inverse square of the velocity of the beam and to be log-divergent at large distances. By summing over partial beams, the number density of untrapped electrons near a particle of a plasma is expressed as an integral over the relative velocity distribution at infinity and equilibrium results are obtained.
