Abstract

CEA and the Commission are senior partners in the Phebus-FP severe accident fission product release and transport programme to be performed at Cadarache, the first test of which is planned for mid-1992. To assist in the design of the tests, verification and sensitivity studies for the bundle, circuit and containment were organised. This paper describes the results for the containment and the consequences for the Phebus containment vessel. The geometry and the initial and boundary conditions were proposed by CEA, and constitute the base case. Participants in the exercise also performed a variety of sensitivity studies concerning vessel design, modelling assumptions, insulation properties and the use of sprays and fan coolers. The feasibility of the containment portion of Phebus-FP was demonstrated by these studies, and some indications were also obtained for improvments to the design and conduct of the experiments.
