The reactor safety research funded by the European Commission
The Commission of the European Communities funds a large research programme which is partly performed at the JRC, the so-called Direct Action, and partly in the National Laboratories through the Shared Cost Action. Part of this effort is devoted to fission energy and to research on nuclear safety. The majority of activities on reactor safety are performed at the Ispra Establishment in Italy, with only a small part executed through the SCA. Even if the interest for the production of electricity from nuclear energy is different in the Member States (about 70% in France and nothing in at least 5 EC countries), the safe operation of the NPPs is of concern for all the Community. The EC programme on reactor safety focusses on development and validation of methodologies and codes to be applied for accident prevention and accident analysis, with special emphasis on the problems related to severe accidents.
