Non-destructive testing methods at the HFR Petten for inspection and examination of LWR fuel rods
Specialised Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) equipment and methods have been developed for underwater operation, providing detailed information regarding the state and physical condition of irradiated Light Water Reactor (LWR) fuel rods. These techniques are applied routinely during LWR fuel testing programmes at the High Flux Reactor, Petten. This contribution focusses on the layout and development of these NDE methods and equipment. Typical results from neutron radiography and eddy current examinations and profilometry of irradiated LWR fuel rods are presented. Neutron radiography primarily provides information on the condition of the fuel stack, the fuel internals and the fuel rod integrity, whilst eddy current examination and profilometry is mainly concerned with the condition, integrity and geometrical behaviour of the fuel cladding.
