Manufacture of high-strength bolts
The aim of this research project was to reduce the cost for the manufacture of high strength bolts of the 8.8 property class by developing a new process where the final quench and temper heat treatment is eliminated. The final heat treatment of the bolts is replaced by a heat treatment of the wire rod in the rolling mill, the Tempcore process. The work carried out involved a comparison of the transformation behaviour and of the user properties of the bolts. The anticipated economic advantage, due to the elimination of the final heat treatment of the bolts manufactured from Tempcore rod is, however, partly reduced by the higher cutting tool wear. Tempcore is therefore recommended in a manufacturing process with no cutting operations.
