The aim of this investigation was the development of techniques to minimise off-centre deviation of the lays during coiling. Statistical investigation of the coiling process revealed that the displacement of the coiler drum as a result of increasing coil weight and the geometry of the pinch roll unit were the significant variables affecting the strip passline in coiling and the resulting front profile of the coil. These results formed the basis for the development of mathematical models of the strip passline during coiling. With the aid of such calculations it was possible to simulate typical coiling faults, such as the telescopic deviation of lays in the entry phase of the strip and the continuous offset of the strip edge during stationary coiling. The following plant engineering measures, designed to improve the quality of the coiling process, are proposed: - improvement of the sideguard positioning systems, - prevention of coiler drum distortion by means of a retractable drum support and - strip passline control by controlled adjustment of the pinch roll set.
