Study of the possibilities of waste disposal in geological formations : the thermo-hydromechanical THM experiment
A simulation test of heat release and the mechanical effects generated by deep disposal of reprocessed waste (long-lived, high-level radioactivity), known as a THM (thermohydromechanical) test, was carried out in an abandoned uranium mine at Tenelles, in the Fanay-Augères area of France. The aim was to study the effect of heat on fractured granite, in particular the distribution of fractures, the elastic deformations and movements due to fractures (closing, opening, shearing, etc.) and the permeability of the geological medium.
