Abstract

The main aim of this project was to measure the flatness of the hot rolled strip upstream of the coilers after the run-out table cooling. Due to recurring operational and engineering problems with the roll engagement and retraction mechanisms, no measurements of strip shape were obtained. However, the size and importance of temperature variations across the strip width were measured and analysed and ideas for controlling the transverse temperature profile by differential cooling were explored. The resulting conclusion is that temperature measurement and correction is essential to monitor or control the flatness of hot rolled strip at or above coiling temperature.
