Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to obtain an analytical method for boron determination in steels between levels from lower than 0.0001% up to 0.100%, by means of inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP) after previous extraction with organic solvents. The system formed by 2 ethyl-1,3-hexanediol in xylene (10% w/v) was selected as the best, because of its good detection rate and lack of chemical and spectral interference. The methodology has been applied to the analysis of total boron in a set of twenty seven international reference steels, with a wide range of alloying elements; good results were obtained.
