Abstract

This research project aimed at improving techniques and raising the performance of blasting as a method of advancing rock and seam drivages in hard-coal mines and to adapt it to meet future needs. The main tasks involved were : - a wide ranging programme of tests to determine the equipment and techniques best suited to the drilling of blast holes and roof-bolt holes; - the devising of planning aids; - improvement of tunnel-support, injection and grouting techniques. Further aims were to ease the heavy physical work involved in drilling and support operations and in the transfer and transport of materials and also, with greater mechanisation of drilling and support, to reduce dangers from falling rock and coal.
