This book contains most of the reports presented at the International Symposium on Extracorporeal CO(2) removal in patients with severe ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) held at the Philipps University, Marburg, in 1987. Clinical results, obtained with the protocol of low-frequency positive-pressure ventilation and extracorporeal CO(2) removal in the palliative treatment of ARDS, are assessed. Methods of ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) respiratory assistance, to be used in paediatric and adult intensive care units, are also evaluated. The need to continue research in palliative therapy of respiratory care and the limits of artificial ventilation are discussed.
