The collisionless m=1 tearing modeFunded under: FP2-FUSION 10C
The instability of a magnetically confined plasma against macroscopic modes is analysed in collisionless regimes where magnetic reconnection occurs because of finite electron inertia and where the ion gyroradius replaces the skin depth as the width of the mode boundary layer. Growth rates are calculated in terms of the Alfvén frequency and the radius of the reconnecting surface. For typical JET parameters, the growth time is of the order of 50-100 microseconds, which compares favourably with the observed instability growth time of internal plasma relaxations.
