  • The programme of the Community Bureau of Reference - BCR - of the European Commission : Aims and achievements in the biomedical analysis sector

Projects in the biomedical analysis sector relate to substances measured in clinical laboratories for diagnostic purposes. Criteria for the selection of projects take account of the clinical importance of the measured substance, the frequency and difficulty of the analysis and the socio-economic consequences of erroneous results. For some ten years the BCR programme has undertaken work on the following groups of topics: - electrolytes - hormones: non proteic and proteic - tumour markers - enzymes - other proteins - heavy metals - substrates and lipids these substances being measured in blood, serum, plasma or urine. Interlaboratory trials are organised to assess the state-of-the-art, and methodological investigations are then conducted to identify errors and sources of discrepancies between laboratories. When appropriate, certified reference materials are prepared.
