In mountain refuges, thermal energy must be produced on site and can be obtained from solar panel collectors. Commonly available solar equipment is not suited to the environments in which refuges are located. The heat transfer system developed by the JRC Ispra is suited to the weather conditions in the mountains. A prototype plant was built for use in the mountains. The solar plant operated correctly, fulfilling expectations and producing water in winter, keeping it lukewarm, and producing hot water in summer. The experiences gained have shown the advantages of having a solar plant which only requires connections on the water circuit.
