Utilisation of processing waste in structural and civil engineering
The following research projects have been brought to a provisional conclusion: - Development of a process to manufacture lightweight aggregates from fluidised bed ashes and use of these in building materials. The aggregate thus produced would serve as a "pumice substitute" if given official approval. - In the manufacture of aerated concrete, the use of fluidised bed ashes was shown to be suitable in conjunction with ready-mixed aerated concrete. Further optimisation experiments will be required prior to its use in building. - Investigations were carried out into the behaviour of sand, chippings and gravel from mine material under the influence of weathering and storage. The utilisation of the building materials that were developed was put to the test in demonstration projects, in which selected and prepared mine debris proved successful as building aggregate. Damage occurring to the buildings is slight and can be avoided by protection against alternate soaking and drying.
