Fatigue strength of welded, unstiffened RHS joints in latticed structures and Vierendeel girders
This report contains the results of the measurements from fatigue tests carried out on T-joints (axially loaded), X-joints (axially loaded; loaded by in-plane bending moments) and K-joints (with gap or overlap, axially loaded) of rectangular hollow sections. It also contains the numerical analysis of the stress and strain behaviour of the joints, using the finite element method. The strain and stress concentration factors were determined experimentally by means of strain gauge measurements and compared with those from the finite element calculation. The influence of the various parameters on the fatigue behaviour of the joints, such as brace width, gap or overlap, brace wall thickness, weld type, chord width, chord wall thickness (fillet weld or buttweld) and stress ratio, was investigated. A modified design method for the rectangular hollow section joints under fatigue load is proposed on the basis of the test results and numerical analysis.
