Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The Club Alpin Français owns 140 buildings which are located in the mountains. These provide accommodation as well as safety facilities for mountain users in bad weather. To enhance user and warden comfort and safety, an electrification project was undertaken in 23 of these refuges - 19 in the Alps and 4 in the Pyrenees. 22 refuges were fitted with photovoltaic systems and 1 with a wind generator. Seven refuges in which snow is the only possible source of water were equipped with solar-powered snow melters, which eliminate the need to fly gas in by helicopter. Three refuges were equipped with heating systems, one with a heating system for the warden's accommodation and two with septic tank heating systems to improve their performance. Two of these refuges are located at a height below 2000 metres and the others are located between 2000 and 3167 metres. All the equipment is operating satisfactorily.
