The analysis of the functional role of man and machine in the control of a notional Auxiliary Feedwater SystemFunded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 5C
The Auxiliary Feedwater System (AFWS) of a pressurised water reactor is described. This supplies secondary feedwater flow to the steam generators of a power plant in case of lack of normal feedwater and, specifically, during the start-up and shut-down phases and during the transient phase of an accident. Various aspects of the simulation of the AFWS and its control loop, based on the design of the actual plant, are presented. The interface of the plant simulation with an external user or with the cognitive model of the operator is described, focussing on the analysis of the control task. An attempt is made to integrate the adopted approach in an overall taxonomy framework, in order to study human actions in a complex work context.
