Characterization and complexation of humic acids
Research contributions to the CEC Mirage II project are summarised, particularly the research on complexation and colloids (COCO). The first part of the report deals with the characterisation of humic and fulvic acids from different origins, a reference humic acid from the Aldrich Co. and site-specific humic acids from aquifer systems in Germany, Belgium and France. The second part includes the complexation of the trivalent actinides Am(III) and Cm(III) with various humic acids. A number of different methods were used for the complexation study: spectrophotometry, ultrafiltration, laser-induced photo-acoustic spectroscopy and time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy. The evaluation process of the complexation constant is discussed and the results can be used directly for the geochemical modelling of radionuclide migration.
