Effective communication between the scientific community and the media
One essential step for coping with hazardous events such as earthquakes and droughts is to reduce the vulnerability of human systems to them. This may be achieved by promoting appropriate urban planning, careful management of resources and effective education for civil protection. Warning information, aimed at promoting proper public behaviour in an emergency, is discussed. The need to improve communications between the mass media and the public, as well as between the scientific community and the mass media is emphasised.
