Abstract

The magnetic properties of all rocksalt-type actinide compounds are extremely anisotropic. The external magnetic fields required to saturate the ferromagnets can be very high. Meaningful measurements of their magnetisation therefore require single crystals and high magnetic fields. Crystal samples of NpAs, NpP and NpSb have been produced, and magnetisation measurements performed on them using a sample-moving magnetometer. The results are presented and discussed. It is concluded that the availability of single crystals of the neptunium pnictides has contributed to the understanding of 5f magnetism.
