The preparation of three rapeseed reference materials (CRMs 190, 366 and 367) and the steps taken to establish the certified values of total glucosinolate and sulphur content are described. Details are given of the studies to demonstrate homogeneity and stability. The results of the certification exercise for total glucosinolate, involving thirteen European laboratories which applied a variety of methods (HPLC, GLC, determination of enzymatically released glucose and sulphate), are presented and discussed. Details of the analytical procedures used to establish certified values for sulphur content are also presented. Indicative values for individual glucosinolates, the identities of which were confirmed by GC-MS and HPLC-MS, are given.
