This book contains information on more than 300 industrial chemicals that may be absorbed through the skin in hazardous quantities. Detailed reviews are given of the chemicals that cause the most significant toxic hazards upon skin contact. Relevant data on individual classes of chemicals are evaluated. A methodology section discusses approaches to determining skin penetration and the resulting health hazards. On the basis of an international survey, governmental regulations on industrial chemicals are shown to vary considerably with regard to evaluation of the toxic potentials of skin contact with chemicals. Criteria are therefore developed for evaluation of skin penetration hazards, and suggestions are given for improved preventative efforts.
