Abstract

The research described aimed to improve the various links of the seismic prospecting sequence as a preparation to seismic inversion, i.e. the determination of the lithology from seismic data. Seismic elastic modelling programs were validated, and modelling was also used to help in the interpretation of deep reflection seismics. The problems of precise velocity estimation were studied as a prerequisite to the tomographic determination of seismic velocity anomalies. The limits of blind deconvolution (determination of the transfer function of linear systems given the output and only some statistical information on the input data) were analysed together with innovative techniques to initialise the search for the seismic wavelet. Classical ray tomography was extended to finite bandwidth data and the limits of the lateral resolution of seismic transmission surveys were assessed in order to evaluate the lateral extent of velocity anomalies.
