Abstract

No crystal structure has previously been reported for a lanthanide tricyclopentadienyl 1:1 adduct with the acetonitrile ligand. Single crystals of the samarium derivative have been obtained from a deuterated acetonitrile solution. The structure of these crystals is reported. The samarium displays pseudo-tetrahedral geometry via coordination to three cyclopentadienyl rings and one sigma-bonded acetonitrile ligand. The molecule as a whole exhibits imposed C(s) symmetry. The Sm-N bond nature and strength are similar for all Ln(C(5)H(5))(3)NC-R (R=alkyl) complexes.
